Craig; June 15, When are we going to get there?

We moved rapidly across the Great Basin (Leah delighted in giving an impromptu geography lesson) in Nevada until we came across this overturned truck just off the road. This left us and 100 other people stopped in the middle of the desert with nothing to do but wait it out. The truck was actually off the road, but for whatever reason, the police were not letting any go around on the shoulder. After roasting in the 105* heat for awhile a few folks decided to find their own way around'

They proceeded to find a hole in the fence next to the road and create their own road until they reached this powerline road. Vehicles of every kind had had enough of the wait and were willing to brave this rough road to get out of the heat and get moving again. The funny part was, the police finally let us start going around the accident and would not let these folks back onto the road until the rest of the stopped cars had passed.

We pushed on through Reno and finally made camp after nightfall in a small town outside of Susanville in CA. This camp was quiet and cool. Finally, some relief from the desert heat.

Craig; June 14, Are we ready? Lets go!

Today we loaded up the boat and pushed away from the dock. It was satisfying to know we were finally steaming along to our first destination, Lassen Volcanic NP in northern California.

The goal for today was to make it somewhere north of Las Vegas and sleep the night. We finally made beautiful Amargosa Valley around 2:00 AM. Never has a dirt parking lot held as much allure. We were tired.

We awoke to find Fort Amargosa bustling with business.
